Pumpkin Hat!

The Fall brings many things we love, knitting, holidays, and pumpkins. Jacob, that would be Sheila's grandson, is modeling a pumpkin hat that you may have noticed in the shop. The beauty of the pumpkin hat (besides wonderful photo opportunities like this one) is that it is a quick and easy knit.

Jacob's hat is following this pattern and used one skein of GGH Aspen. The pattern calls for 4 stitches to the inch. As for the stem, you can use scrap yarn in green or brown.

If you use Ravelry's search tool, you are sure to find other patterns in other weights. If you are looking for a fun and quick knit that will make everyone "oh" or "ah", then try knitting a pumpkin hat!

Felted Baskets

It is very easy to see clothing inspired by knitting styles in Anthropologie (or vice versa) but usually when we see knitting in furniture store catalogs, like Crate and Barrel, it is usually as accessories in the photos. For example, balls of yarn artfully placed in a basket.

After receiving the recent CB2 catalog (Crate and Barrel uber-modern catalog) I noticed a few felted boxes that reminded me of ones located in the Mason Dixon Knitting book.

New Fall Bulky Yarns

First up is Lang Yarns Mille Colori Big. It's a wool acrylic blend with 207 yards and gets 12 stitches to 4".
Berroco Campus is a wool, acrylic, alpaca blend with 130 yards. The gauge is also 12 stitches to 4" on a 10.5 needle.

Thick n Quick Merino is 100% merino wool. It has 175 yards and is 2.5 stitches to the inch on an 11.

Berroco Borealis is an acrylic and wool blend. It's 108 yards and 12 stitches to 4" on an 11.

Viking Balder is 100% machine wash wool! It's 137 yards and also 12 stitches to 4" on an 11.

Schulana Pinturas is wool and self stripes. It's 87 yards and gets 3 stitches to an inch on a 10.

Schulana Rodeo is super kid mohair, merino, and nylon. It's 109 yards and the gauge is 2.5 to 3.5 stitches to an inch on an 11 to a 15.

Sculana Cambada is 87 yards and merino wool. It's gauge is 11 stitches to 4" on an 11 to a 15.

Ester Bitran Tirua is wool and 132 yards. The gauge is 3.5 stitches to the inch on a 10.

Cascade Magnum is wool and 123 yards. It's super bulky and gets 2 stitches to an inch on a 15.

Austermann Murano is a wool and acrylic blend. It's 262 yards and has a gauge of 13 stitches to 4" on an 11.

Finally, we have Feza Fanatic. It's a self striping yarn that's an acrylic, wool, nylon blend. It's 231 yards and gets 16 stitches to 4" on a 10. This would make a great "team" colored scarf. Monica suggests using this yarn to make Frankie Brown's Ten Stitch Swirl or Ten Stitch Blanket.

Coming off the resounding success of the first event back in June, it’s time to chase away the winter doldrums with stix-n-stitches second salacious yarn swap!

Take this opportunity to pass on those yarns that have gone from “love at first sight” to “old flames” who just don’t quite inspire you the way they originally did.

Since you’re freeing up all that room in your stash, be sure to see what others have brought.

Maybe that perfect “just gotta have it” yarn has been hiding away in someone else’s stock and is ready to be made into that project you’ve been dreaming about.
The swap is a great time to get your fiber groove on in the company of other yarn fanatics and meet new friends. Come on in and have a great time!

We will be hosting the swap on:
Friday, January 29th 6pm-9pm
and
Saturday, January 30, 11am-3pm.
All yarns must be in separate plastic bags and tagged to indicate fiber content, gauge, yardage, price, and your name.

Friday will be a secret “email members only” swap direct between parties and you may leave your items to be sold in store to the public on Saturday - all monies go to you.

You may drop off bagged and tagged items at the store any time during business hours the week of Tuesday January 26- Friday January 29 from 10am to 4pm.

Weekend Wrap-Up

The KAL for balaclavas for the soldiers has been going great. We are still accepting balaclavas, so stop by the shop to pick up a pattern and yarn.

There are plenty of projects that still need to be knit. We have lovely colors of Lustre which is oh so shiny and looks great in this crocheted hat pattern. This yarn has a sheen that will attract your eyes.

Deb stopped by to show off some of her latest creations. She has been on a hat binge.

The hats are coming out great. The fashionable trend is towards the slouchy hats. Go on ravelry and check some out!

Knit Helmet Liners for our Troops

stix-n-stitches is participating in the Local Yarn Store National Helmet Liner Drive. You can support a soldier knit/crochet a helmet liner. The helmet liners will be shipped to our soldiers serving oversees. Stix-n-stitchers can pick up yarn and the pattern at the shop. There are specific requirements that need to be adhered, so it is very important to pick up information from the shop. We have already received several (see photo above) but it would be great to have everyone contribute.

FALL-WINTER 2009 Classes

MAKE YOUR OWN STITCH MARKERS CLASS
Fee $25 Friday Evening- October 23rd. 6:30-9PM
This class is for all levels of knitters, from beginner knitters to experienced knitters. You will make your own beaded stitch markers (or make them for someone else as a gift). You will leave with at least 5 beaded stitch markers at the end of the class. There will be an optional knitting trivia quiz. Winners will win stitch marker samples designed and handmade by the instructor. Tool Kit with beads will be provided and are included in the cost of the class. People who require reading glasses need to bring them to the class Maximum Students- 15

COBWEB LACE FRILL CLASS
Fee $35 Sunday November 1 2-4PM
Come in the store to see the samples! Cobweb Lace Frill is a wonderful beginning lace pattern, fun to do, looks very impressive with very little work, very delicate and showy at the same time. It’s based on a pattern from Barbara Walker’s Treasury Vol. 2, makes a great edging for around the waist or wrists of sweater, or a stand-alone collar, cuff, or scarf. The frill is also easily changeable from a very lush full frill, to a much smaller, simpler one. The type of stitch doesn’t change, just some of the numbers. The class will cover the structure of the pattern. We’ll knit a sampler of it, and go over how to make a few simple projects, including children’s cuffs, and a narrow scarf. Requirements for sampler made in class:50 yards of sock or lace weight wool, (heavier weight might need more) with appropriate size needles. Some lightweight waste wool or, even better, crochet cotton for running markers. (I’ll have extra with me) Skill level for sampler: low intermediate. Must be able to cast-on (long-tail cast on preferred, but others might work, too), knit, purl, bind off. I’ll be teaching yarn over, knit two together, pass slip stitch over, and very simple chart reading.

KNIT YOUR FIRST (OR SECOND OR THIRD) SWEATER
Fee $175 Sundays, November 1, November 8, November 15, December 6 and December 13 10AM-12PM - 6 sessions
This is a class for those who know the fundamentals, but who wish to go farther than knitting scarves. You will learn about sizing, how to do a gauge swatch, how to read a pattern, shaping, and anything else that comes up in your pattern. You will select a sweater after consulting with the teacher. This should be arranged in advance. Please note that there will be no class on November 29.
STASH REDUCTION AFGHAN KNIT ALONG – Fee $60 Tuesdays, November 3, November 10, November 17, 6:30PM- 8 PM - 3 sessions Is your stash taking over your life? Turn those stray skeins into a gorgeous showpiece for your home. We will be offering a class/knit along with any options for knitted blankets that use odds and ends. Examples will be shown in the store so students can choose their favorite. Some of the patterns are free, some are downloadable patterns to purchase, and some are from books. Students are responsible for obtaining them

SOCKS ON Friday
Fee $75 Fridays November 6, November 20, December 4, 3PM-5PM – 3 sessions
Socks are great portable projects and are easier to knit than you might think. After wearing hand knit socks, never again will you want to wear “store bought”. You will learn how to cast on in the round, knit in the round, turn a heel using the short row method, and graft a toe. We will teach both “magic loop” on one circular and double pointed needle. We will also explore tips and tricks for neater sock knitting. Please purchase yarn and needles prior to the class. Requirements: Must know how to knit, purl, cast on and bind off. Please note that the class meets every other week, to facilitate knitting to the next step of the sock.

HOW TO KNIT, A PARENT CHILD CLASS
Fee $125 for 1 parent and 1 child Saturdays, November 7, November 14, November 21 10AM-11AM
This is a beginner’s class or a class for parent and child. You will learn how to cast on, knit and purl, and cast off. We will be knitting a simple scarf, in your choice of yarn. Age minimum for children is 8.

FELTING FOR THE FIRST TIME
Fee $95 Wednesdays, November 11, December 2, 9, 10:30- 12:30
In three sessions, learn how to: design a square or rectangular handbag or tote; select yarns and needles appropriate for felting; knit, felt, block, and dry your bag; and care for your felted accessory. As a bonus, you’ll also learn knitting in the round, I-cords and I-cord bind-off, yarn over buttonholes, and some simple exercises to keep your wrists and hands relaxed while you knit! Requirements: Ability to knit, purl, increase, decrease, cast on and bind off. Class fee includes a nifty binder with reference materials for sizing and designing bags, felting do’s and don’ts. Plan to select yarn, needles, and notions at the first class.

FINISHING FUNDAMENTALS
Fee $35 Wednesday - November 18 - 10:00AM-12:00PM
Do you love to knit but hate to sew the sweater together? Learn how to seam, pick up stitches, make buttonholes, darn in ends, and much more. Included are tips and tricks to make your sweater a garment you will be proud to wear. Intermediate knitting skills required. Requirements: Finishing class fills up fast. Please register early and pick up your homework assignment.

PRIVATE CLASSES WILL BE AVAILABLE EVERY WEDNESDAY
Fee $30 per class
Do you have a knitting project that has you stuck? Have you been interested in learning a new technique? You may have an old project sitting in your knitting basket just begging to be finished, but that has you frustrated. This is the opportunity to take a private class that will help get you going again. Must call to reserve your spot.

EZ, Jared, and Sunday....

There is so much to say and such an interesting intersection of six degress of separation.

It could have begun with the EZ sweater that Sunday interpreted and redesigned utilizing her knowledge of Elizabeth's kntting techniques and historical travels. A sweater which Sunday took time, thought, and a mental database of knitting prowess those of us who know her admire. Some ladies from Twist Collective learned of this re-imagination and then Sunday was writing an article (or should I say the article) for Twist on this process. EZ's god-daughter, the recipient of the sweater, also wrote an article enlightening us a little bit more of this inspiring woman. Within hours of the article's online publication, threads popped up on Ravelry asking for the pattern. (Something Sunday is writing, yeah!)

Well, along the way, Sunday brought the original sweater and the recreation to the photographer's apartment in New York. The photographer was none other than Jared Flood. Mr. Flood, also known as Brooklyn Tweed, has inspired the noro-striped scarf, the hemlock ring blanket, the girasole, and so many patterns that we sit back and wait for his latest creation. Jared also write a post about his experience photographing this found treasure.

So many connections and intersections, we feel blessed to witness the sweater's arrival to every debate Sunday (had with herself) on the meticulous details within the sweater, to the articles, and her pattern's arrival.

Along the way, we met Jared Flood as he celebrated the release of his new book Made in Brooklyn by visiting us last Sunday.

Here is Sheila's sample of one of the patterns within the book.

We had a lot of visitors, old and new friends, that sat and chatted with Jared, played with fall yarns, or relaxed for a few minutes knitting on the sofas.

At the end of the day, Sunday and Jared caught up for a quiet and relaxing talk.

We loved having Jared visit us. He was humble, intelligent, and charming; everything we expected.

Flood at stix!

We are incredibly excited to announce that Jared Flood, the designer of the Cobblestone sweater, Girasole, and the individual who innovated the Hemlock Ring Blanket and the Noro striped scarf, will be at stix-n-stitches this Sunday, September 13th, from 1-3pm. Jared has published a new book, Made in Brooklyn which he will be promoting in this special book signing and meet and greet. We will have books available in case you have not picked yours up recently.

Machine Washable ...YARN!

We have new Fall yarns arriving all the time and we also have new machine washable yarn that is great for baby items or items for you. So, let's begin the introductions:

Crystal Palaca Merino 5 Prints yarn is a worsted weight yarn that knits at 20 stitches to 4 inches. Each wool ball contains 110 yards. There are some great colors and we have a store sample in the Yankee Knitter Stocking Cap pattern.

We also have a self-striping yarn from Crystal Palace that is called Mochi Plus. While this 95 yard ball knits at 16-18 stitches over 4 inches which would be fabulous for a Baby Surprise Jacket or an entrelac pattern or even the Ten Stitch Twist blanket (Ravelry download). This yarn is incredibly soft.

Also in the shop, from Sandness Garn, is Alpakka. It is made from alpaca (big surprise) and yes it is machine washable. Each skein has 120 yards and knits at 22 stitches at 4 inches on a US 6.

Thursday Night Update

Thursday was such a pleasant night with knitting galore. Anne brought in her ten stitch blanket (pattern is available on Ravelry as a free download) and is "ohmygoshgorgeous". Anne picked this yarn up at the anniversary sale for a killer price. We still have this yarn available it is the Poems yarn. I will let you know that she is using two different colors for this blanket.

Speaking of "ohmygoshgorgeous"-check out Lucie pleated cardigan in Berroco Comfort. Modeled by another Thursday knitter (who totally rocks) this sweater is so cute and yet incredibly soft and machine washable.

I thought I would throw a random shot of the new Berroco Lustra that has come into the shop. The yarn has an amazing shine probably due to the tencel and wool. It is worsted weight yarn at 18 stitches to 4" and contains 197 yards. Come check out this and the way too many new fall yarns that are arriving in the shopp (did I say too many? ha! just kidding).

Sale Corner? and yarn...

Ok, I wasn't very creative about the title of this post but I thought it was aptly named. Our August project has been moving yarn around the shop. So, instead of the yarn being organized from chunky to lace weight yarn, when you walk in the shop you will first now see sock, lace, and fingering weight yarn and the bulky will be in the back of the shop. What's really cool is the sale shelves we now have in the back of the shop?

Very cool.

The knitting elves put of the Cotton Classic in a new color order which reminds me of pantone colors.

For those in the stix-n-stitchers Ravelry group, one of our knitters wants to make a sweater for her man based on a sweater he has and loved for a long time. She brought in the sweater and launched into a new project. We have faith she can do this. We investigated the look of the yarn, the gauge, the pattern, and so much more. We can't wait to see where she gets.

We also had this knitter and her lovely dog come into the shop. Isn't she adorable? Don't mind the Gentle Leader which is for dogs who tug on the leash and not a muzzle. This sweetheart found out we had dog cookies and decided it was a good place to be: beautiful fibers, air conditioning, and dog biscuits- she was in heaven.

Sometimes, I wonder what photos I still need to post and voila I find Lucy showing off her most recent cardigan. Lucy is the greatest and always an example of elegance and grace. She is right now working on the cutest hip cardigan for a family friend.

This is Joann's latest Baby Surprise Jacket in Colinette Cadenza which is a dk machine washable yarn that feels oh so nice. She is doing great on the sweater (yes, the sweater is tilted).

I don't think we mentioned the new Blue Heron yarns that came in-it is so worth stopping by especially since new fall yarns are coming in all the time....

Thursday Night Knit Night

Would you believe this is knitted?

How about now? Cathy finished her fair isle cardigan and we are all so jealous. Camera phones were whipped out on Thursday night to document this stunning piece. Cathy was debating how to pose for the picture but that smile cannot be considered posed, that is one happy knitter.

She also brought in this gorgeous baby cardigan and bonnet knit out of bebe boo. This is soft and squishable that the recipient will be very content.

Yet, Cathy wasn't done there either. Check out this adorable cardigan which is knit out of Claudia Handpainted in Teacup. The reverse stockinette has these adorable baubles. The hood is fabulous!

Weekend Wrap-Up

We love showing off what our knitters make and how could we not? Check out this pretty cardigan. This person was picking out buttons.

I love this baby blanket in primary colors. It is knit in Berroco Comfort DK. What this clever knitter did was knit a think strip in garter stitch and used one skein for each strip (remember comfort dk has 178 yards). She is debating how to edge the strip with Sheila in the red. We can't wait to see the finished product.

Did we mention we received new colors of Zara? Definitely worth checking out!

Sheila has been playing with some new yarn that is not only superbulky and fun but an incredibly quick knit. She knit this scarf in a few hours which is great for those emergency holiday gifts.

The Poker Chip sale continues tomorrow with chips ranging from 15 to 50 percent off (including the sale stuff). It is insane to watch someone buy a knitting bag that is on sale for 50% off (all knitting bags and needle holders are one sale) and then to get an additional percentage off of that.

So, I thought it would be good to show you some of the new yarns.

First let me introduce you to Mojito brought to you by Alpaca with a Twist: This yarn has plied alpaca and knits up at 16-20 stitches over 4 inches. This worsted weight yarn contains 145 yards in each hank. It's so pretty but you seriously need to touch it to fully appreciate it.

We love Queensland Collection which is why I am going to introduce you to Rustic Wool. This machine washable wool (I did type machine washable) comes in great semi-solid colors. At 18 stitches over 4 inches on a size 8 uS needle, each ball contains 99 yards. Can you imagine this in a Baby Surprise Jacker or even the Wicked sweater (both patterns available in the shop).

Remi was showing off her latest sweater and bonnet set on Thursday. How cute is that?

Mini Updates and a sheep named Carol

We are in the full swing of the poker chip sale and at the same time we started receiving fall yarns. This is just some of the yarn we have received. We have new colors of Kathmandu Aran, Rustic, and all sorts of yummy things. So a lucky shopper could very well pick up a poker chip and get a large discount on new yarns. Good luck to all those shopping!

Last thursday, one of our regulars gave us a delicious blueberry pie which as you can see we enjoyed! Thank you. I like posting photos of the snacks people bring in- just in case you are curious!

Sheila received a surprise gift in the mail from one of our favorite people in the whole world, well, certainly within this continent. Sheila has been showing off her new sheep named "Carol" given to us by a wonderful woman by the same name. We miss you Carol! What a great birthday present.

Speaking of presents, some of our knitters like to give each other surprise gifts. Remi came in the shop on Thursday to find this box with her name on it. Inside a pair of felted slippers from Anne H. Anne has taught the "Tips, Tricks, and Techniques" class (which we tried eavesdropping in on) and is a gifted knitter.

Speaking of Anne, Knitty posted their surprise patterns. One of which is Cubix2. As soon as Sheila printed this pattern, Amy and I exclaimed this is a pattern for Anne. Sheila's response, "She's going to make changes". The next day when Sheila pointed out the pattern, Anne smiled and said, "I like it but I am probably going to make changes".

I have pictures of the new yarns coming soon. The poker chip sales this week so make sure to stop in. It does get a little hectic so we recommend having ideas of patterns, weight and quantity of yarn when you come in.

Weelend Wrap-up

Sheila finished another Baby Surprise Jacket in Jojolan Rhythm. This beautiful self-striping yarn which works out well for the BSJ.

I was away for a few days on a bus tour and was working on a Baby Surprise also in Jojoland Rhythm. What's great about this yarn is the stunning progression of color.

We also got in some new hand lotion. I have tried it and it has a delicate citrus smell and has no residual waxy feel (which is great to put on between knitting).

Sheila picked up some new friends. They are scattered throughout the shop. You know, Sheila could not resist picking up more sheep. She is open to suggestions on the names.

Thursday Night Update

Another packed Thursday night with knitters and a spinner. Usually, Norah has the spin weel out but this time it was Fran spinning some yarn.

Anne (and Joann) were working on their Baby Surprise Jackets. Anne finished hers and was seaming the sleeves after this photo was taken. She did pick up some cute cute white baseball buttons which "popped" against the background.
Mary Ellen has been rocking the argyle scarf that is in Son of a Stitch n' Bitch. Woah! We are thoroughly impressed with her tackling this pattern and what's so beautiful is that this is the same pattern on the other side (just inverse of the colors).
Oh-for those looking for the fancy schmancy stitch markers, well they are back and in stock at the shop.

Weekend Update

If you haven't been in the shop for a while check out some new stuff.

We have Kashmir Baby yarn which is Merino wool, microfibre, and cashmere. This yarn is incredibly soft and knits at 24 stitches over 4 inches. Each ball contains 143 yards. Our store sample is the One Piece Baby Kimono from Mason Dixon Knitting. We have lots of colors available. Any baby would love the feel of this against their delicate skin.

While it is early to consider tweeds this divine yarn is Highlander. It is so so soft and knits up quickly at 16 stitches over 4 inches. It is not surprising that this is divine to touch as it contains alpaca. This yarn is demonstrated with a simple top down baby sweater. Each hank has 145 yards and US 9 needle is recommended.

We have some decadent sock yarn that has some stunning colors. It is the Prism yarn that is 80% merino and 20% nylon. Size US 3 is recommended for this yarn as 6.5 stitches per inch. Look at those colors!

Thursday Night Two

Katie made some adorable crocheted creatures for Sheila that she will love when she gets back from her vacation this week. I think they really liked the Misti Alpaca sock yarn. The owl is so cute, but the apple has a worm coming out of the left side.

Lindsay besides having fun with Max was working on this pretty item knit in Berroco Comfort. She was using the soft green as a border and the multi color had these delicate little cables. Fran's sock monkey was overseeing the progress while fondling some lime green yarn.

Karen a self-proclaimed "inexperienced knitter" just finished this stunning vest from a pattern she purchased on Ravelry. She did an amazing job on this piece. I believe she stopped by for a question and just kept on going and completing the neckband.

Thursday Night goes to the dogs

Thursday Night was super packed right before the July 4th weekend. With no seats available and all the extra chairs being used, we also had a couple of canine visitors. Lily, a rescued Labradoodle, was visiting us with her owner, Amy, and spent a while making friends with everyone. Lily was the former resident of a puppy mill until a rescue organization got her out and into the loving home of Amy.

Max also spent Thursday night getting rubs and affection. Max, Shih Tzu, is also a rescue and he accompanied his owner Lindsay.
Both white fluffy things were at the back table.

Speaking of Amy earlier check out what she is making from various colors of the discontinued Silky Wool that Sheila had on sale during the sidewalk sale. Amy is improvising the pattern and knitting them in long strips.

Monika made these chocolate peanut butter parcels of heaven for the night and they were divine. I offered to everyone before I had a second one. They went quickly because they were deliciously scrumptious!

There was so much activity that I will write another post which include photos of Katie's crochet toys for Sheila, a beautiful vest made by Karen, and Lindsay's sweater.

For those who don't know Mary Claire and her mom Anne they are so much fun. Anne has been recuperating from surgery so Mary Claire came in to select yarn for the baby surprise jacket class with her dad and she did a great job. She was also looking for yarn for a new and challenging project the Wavy scarf from Knitty. This pattern is a little more difficult than it initially appears but she debated the other suggestions and decided to tackle this one. Therefore, she is inspirational.

Doesn't the scarf look great? It is knit out of Chunky Alpaca in this stunning turquoise to complement her brown jacket she is knitting. If we could clone this teenager we certainly would.

I just wanted to highlight a yarn that has been overlooked in the shop and I love it! It is from Wisdom Yarns called Poems. It has some beautiful stripes in it. I think this would look stunning in the Ten Stitch Blanket or the Ten Stitch Swirl Blanket. I wish I could post links to both of those free patterns but you will need to join Ravelry (which is also free and a great resource).

It is a worsted weight yarn that is wool. It is a great price and is super soft.

Definitely stop by and check out this yarn!

In case you missed Thursday Night Knitting, you missed some home made chocolate covered strawberries which Lisa Marie made and were oh so yummy.

You also missed a ton of knitting and crocheting activity. And this was just one side of the room!

Some of the usual suspects were present as well as some new folks who stopped into the shop.

Some of the talk obviously surrounded the shocking news of Michael Jackson, Trevor's new knitting project, and recommended summer knits.

I haven't posted these new knitting cards that we have but they are great for your knitting friend or swap partner. The little graphics are actually pins.

We received Can-Can from Schulana which is this cute little accent yarn for some summer knits.
Can-can has 61 yards but it is a bulky yarn. It is synthetic yarn which can be knit on 11 us size needles.

For example, knit a scribble scarf. Use can-can with a thinner yarn and voila a great accessory!

And Deb stopped by with her recent crochet accomplishment. Knit in Noro yarn, this is a great pattern. Ask Sheila for the pattern (and if you see Ed in the shop ask him how he made a variation of this scarf).

Sidewalk Sale and WWKIPD

Although, we were rained in by the showers yesterday, the Sidewalk Sale and WWKIP Day was a blast!

At the shop, the yarn swap was in full swing with people finding great deals. Some of the yarns on the table included Noro, Karabella, Lorna's Laces, and all sorts of other delicious fibers. Also in the shop were some great buys with Cascade Sierra, discontinued colors of Silky Tweed and Wool for amazing prices (to name a couple).

However sitting and knitting in the shop was the best. Remi was working on a fun dishcloth while Trevor was churning out socks. Patty was strolling through the shop with Berroco Comfort socks on her needles, Lisa was searching for a sweater with Eva (and was very successful with a pattern from Feminine Knits), and Ed was entrancing everyone with his crazy cool crochet scarf.
We had a lot of people catching up and others were meeting for the first time. Watch out for another swap in the future!

SUMMER 2009 Classes

Beginner’s Knitting- For the summer; we will be offering a quick start beginner’s class, to get you all knitting on those long, lazy vacation days. This will be a three session class, and while not as exhaustive as our six week series, will offer all of the basics: Cast on, Knit, Purl, Bind off, and other tips such as how to add in new skeins. The project will be a sampler scarf to knit while you learn. See class handout for supplies list. You will be required to buy your own yarn and needles. Worried that you can’t make all three classes? The class will be offered over four Saturdays. Pick your three sessions of the four.

(3) 1 hour sessions $45 - Saturdays, June 20, June 27, July 11, 18 (No Class on July 4) 10AM

EZ Baby Surprise Basics- The Elizabeth Zimmerman Baby Surprise Jacket continues to be a phenomenon. While the jacket is easy and fun, knitters frequently approach it with trepidation. This class will ease your fears. We will cover all of the techniques required to knit it, and discuss the design of the jacket. When you leave this class, you will have a firm grasp of the concept, and be on your way to completion. Pattern and yarn purchase required. Students must know basic knitting techniques.

(2) 2 hour sessions $50 - Tuesdays, July 7, 14 7PM

How to Design Your Own Scarves and Wraps- There are so many times when we see and gorgeous yarn that we simply must have. But what should we do with it? Never again turn away from a beautiful yarn with a sob in your throat because you can’t find a pattern. (Of course, that doesn’t stop us “yarn collectors”!) In this class, we will discuss characteristics of different fibers, how to swatch effectively, sources for pattern stitches, how to determine how many stitches to cast on, and hints for a nicer looking scarf or rectangular wrap. Bring your yarn of choice, and see class handout for supplies list. Students must know basic knitting techniques.

(1) 2 hour session $30 - Sunday June 28 11AM

Top Down Sweaters- Do you need a fast, easy baby sweater in your repertoire for all of those family and friends who are having babies? This sweater class will fill the bill. Once you have learned the basics of top down, you can continue on to make sweaters for the whole family. We will be making a top down baby sweater for approx. 6mos to 1 year. Because most of the shaping is done in the beginning, this class will only meet for 2 sessions. Once you are at the underarm portion, you will be able to sail through the body. The best part: no sewing together! We will work from a pattern that is provided in the class. You pick your own yarn. See class homework sheet for details. Students must know knit and purl. Some garment experience is strongly recommended.

(2) 2 hour sessions, $50 - Fridays, July 11, 18 1PM

Help Desk- Do you feel “in over your head” with a project? We will be offering a help class each week. Bring in your knitting to learn how to fix whatever problem you may have, or to learn how to perform a technique required in a pattern. This is more intensive than just asking a quick question. So, pull out that UFO get re-inspired! Remember, your most important knitting tool is your brain!

(1) hour sessions, $20 appointment necessary - Thursdays, 1PM

Socks- Socks are addictive! Find out what all the fuss is about. Learn how to knit a basic sock, top down with a short row heel. As before, class will be offered over 4 days. Pick any three for your class. Pattern will be provided. Pick up supplies list when signing up. Students must know knit, purl, and basic knitting techniques. Worried that you can’t make all three classes? The class will be offered over four Fridays. Pick your three sessions of the four.

Yarn Swap and Sale

We will be hosting a Swap and Sale on
Friday, June 12th – 6PM-8PM and Saturday, June 13th – 11AM-3PM.

All yarns must be in separate plastic bags- tagged as to fiber content and yardage as well as being priced and labeled with your name.

Friday evening will be a direct swap or sale between parties and you may leave your items to be sold at the Sidewalk Sale on Saturday- all monies to go to you. Cash is required for any Yarn Swap purchases.

I am asking for volunteers to work tables from 11AM-3PM in two hour shifts.

As Saturday is World Wide Knit in Public Day,as well as Montclair Center’s Sidewalk Sale, we will be giving knitting and crocheting demonstrations and lessons.

The Maya yarn has arrived and we are in love.

The yarn is 100% cotton and is so luxurious to touch. Although it only comes in a few colors (see above), it is very soft. Incredibly soft. Sheila is working on this wrap which is knit in simple garter stitch. It is only 40 stitches.

Stop by as I after I took this photo all the kahki was purchased. It is going quickly.

This is a beginner’s class or a class for people who need a refresher course in knitting. Learn all of the fundamentals: casting on, knit, purl, binding off, shaping, gauge, basic finishing and how to read a pattern. By the end of the class, you will have learned all of the techniques needed to knit a sweater. Really.

FINISHING FUNDAMENTALS

1 session, Wednesday March 18, 10AM-12:30PM, OR Sunday April 26 2PM-4:30PM

Fee $40

This class will teach mattress stitch, three needle bind off, how to sew side seams, a drop shoulder sleeve, and how to pick up stitches for necklines, and other tips and tricks for neater garments. We will also do buttonholes if time allows.

KNIT YOUR FIRST (OR SECOND OR THIRD) SWEATER

6 sessions, Sundays, March 8, 15, 22, 29, April 5, 19, 10AM-12PM

This is a class for those who know the fundamentals, but who wish to go farther than knitting scarves. FIX MISTAKES FEARLESSLY

1 session, Wednesday, April 1, 10AM-12PM

Fee $35

Many knitters feel intimidated by fixing mistakes in their knitting. This class will de-mystify the process and give you plenty of practice so the next time you drop a stitch or need to turn a purl into a knit, you will feel like a pro. We will also teach some tips and tricks to help you avoid those dreaded mistakes. You will leave the class with a clearer understanding of the nature of knits and purls. This class is for beginner and intimidated intermediate knitters.

SOCKS ON SUNDAY 3 SESSIONS,

Your choice of 3 classes- Sunday March 22, 29, April 5, 19 2PM-4PM

Fee $90

This is an accelerated sock class in which we knit a top down, short row heel sock. The sock is knit in fingering or dk weight yarn- knitters choice. The following skills are taught: casting on in the round, ribbing and stockinette stitch in the round, knitting a short row heel flap, grafting, and sizing. In addition, we will discuss tips and tricks for neater (and easier) socks, and knitting a sock with a long circular needle.Must know how to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off. Supplies: 100 grams of fingering weight sock yarn, or 150 gms of DK sock yarn, double pointed needles or a 47 inch circular needle in a size appropriate to the yarn.

MITTENS:

2 Sessions, Tuesdays, March 17, 24, 7PM-9PM

Fee $60

If you are a beginner who has grown tired of scarves, and is ready for a new obsession, you may enjoy mittens. They are fast, don’t use a lot of yarn, and are a fun gift. This class will teach you to cast on and knit in the round on double pointed needles or with a “magic loop”, how to increase, decrease, do an afterthought thumb and weave in ends.

New Yarn: Zauberball!

We received Zauberball which is this gorgeous sock yarn that has long color stripes. Sheila knit up a swatch utilizing different needle sizes. Each ball contains 460 yards of wool nylon blend yarn that can be knit in size 2 needle.

We have several different lovely colorways. If socks are not your thing, than consider making the Wedge Scarf or the Gathered Scarf.

We have a new store sample which is super warm, stop by and see this new creation.

On Sunday, Barbara was hanging out and working on the shoulder seams of her sweater.

We were happy to see all the faces who braved the strong odor from across the street (a new roof was being put down). We haven't had a cold winter in a long time so this is the season for knitting and crocheting to keep you warm.

Sorry for the long delay between posts. So, let's play catch up...

Here are some February Lady Sweaters.

Isn't the Ultra Alpaca lovely?

Or how about this autumn colored one?

With the holidays quickly approaching, looking for some yarns that are pretty and a quick knit?

Check out the Linie 210 Padua. While the yarn only has 65 yards which knits at 13 stitches per 4" on size 10.5 needle.

Another quick knit that is super yummy is Sulka which has been restocked. Each skein has 55 yards and it knits 16 stitches=4 inches on size US 10 needle. This yarn consists of Wool, Silk, and Alpaca which translates into a super soft yarn.

So, new yarns in the shop (in case you haven't noticed)...

New Colors of Reynolds Play Time. This worsted weight yarn knits at 19 stitches over 4 inches and machine washable. The yarn is wool and acrylic. It is a great yarn! Check out Susan Anderson's Itty Bitty Hats book for some great possibilities.

Also, back in the shop is The Queensland Collection Kathmandu yarn. This is such an impressive tweed yarn that knits at 18 stitches at 4 inches on size 8 US needle. The yarn is silk, cashmere, and merino wool.

Recommendations? For a man, try the Cobblestone Sweater by Jared Flood. For a woman, try The Central Park Hoodie. For something free, check out the Transitions Yoke Cardigan.

Yet, the February Sweaters keep popping up all over the shop. This one in a yummy eggplant color made out of Cascade Venezia came in the shop to check out complimentary buttons.

Kelly brought her completed sweater in Malabrigo. Kelly opted for no buttons in her sweater.

Kelly also stopped by to show off her baby blanket for a co-worker. She crocheted using various stash sock yarns.

Then, a bear stopped by, his name was Harry. He was very nice, but he left.

SOCKS ON SUNDAY
Fee $90 Sundays, September 21, October 5, October 19 – 2PM-4PM – 3 sessions
Socks are great portable projects and are easier to knit than you might think. After wearing hand knit socks, never again will you want to wear “store bought”. You will learn how to cast on in the round, knit in the round, turn a heel using the short row method, and graft a toe. We will teach both “magic loop” on one circular and double pointed needle. We will also explore tips and tricks for neater sock knitting. Please purchase yarn and needles prior to the class. Requirements: Must know how to knit, purl, cast on and bind off.

FAIR ISLE HAT
Fee: $35 Monday - September 22, 6:30 – 8:00PM
Learn to knit fair isle carrying a color in each hand. It is easier than you think. This simple hat makes a great gift and may just be the first of many fair isle projects. This is a class for advanced beginner/intermediate knitters. You must be comfortable knitting in the round with both circular and double pointed needles.NOTE: Stop by in advance to pick up your yarn, needles, and homework.

CAST ON/ BIND OFF
Fee $70 Tuesdays, September 23, 30 11:30AM-1:30PM - 2 sessions
While we all have our favorite go- to cast on, many current patterns use interesting, novel cast ons and bind offs. Learn four wonderful cast ons and bind offs and when and why to use them. We will focus on I Cord Cast on, Provisional, Life Line, and Twisted Norwegian Cast ons, and the 3 Needle, Sewn, Suspended and Picot Bind off.

FIX MISTAKES FEARLESSLY
Fee $35 Wednesday - September 24 - 11:30AM-1:30PM
We have had many requests for a class like this. Many knitters feel intimidated by fixing mistakes in their knitting. This class will de-mystify the process and give you plenty of practice so the next time you drop a stitch or need to turn a purl into a knit; you will feel like a pro. We will also teach some tips and tricks to help you avoid those dreaded mistakes. You will leave the class with a clearer understanding of the nature of knits and purls.

DESIGN A SAMPLER SCARF with REVERSIBLE STITCHES
Fee $40 Wednesday - October 1 - 11:30 AM–1:30 PM.
Reversible stitches come in many versions from simple to complex. You’ll get acquainted with several variations, learn to read stitch guides/charts, and how to calculate stitches for pattern repeats and changing pattern repeats. NOTE: Stop by in advance to pick up recommended yarn and needles.

BEGINNER’S FELTING
Fee: $100 Mondays - Oct 6, 20, and Nov 3 - 6:30 – 8:00 PM - 3 sessions
In three sessions, learn how to: design a square or rectangular handbag or tote; select yarns and needles appropriate for felting; knit, felt, block, dry and care for your felted accessory. As a bonus, you’ll also learn knitting in the round, I-cords and I-cord bind-offs, yarn over buttonholes, and some simple exercises to keep your wrists and hands relaxed while you knit. Class fee includes a nifty binder with reference materials for sizing and designing bags. Requirements: Ability to knit, purl, increase, decrease, cast on and bind off. Plan to select your yarn, needles, and notions at the first class. If you have size 13 circulars (any length) bring them.

FINISHING FUNDAMENTALS
Fee $35 Wednesday - October 8 - 11:30AM-1:30PM
Do you love to knit but hate to sew the sweater together? Learn how to seam, pick up stitches, make buttonholes, darn in ends, and much more. Included are tips and tricks to make your sweater a garment you will be proud to wear. Intermediate knitting skills required. Requirements: Finishing class fills up fast. Please register early and pick up your homework assignment.

A FAIR ISLE KNIT ALONG
Fee $75 Fridays October 10, 17, 24: 12:30PM -2:30PM - 3 sessions
Fair Isle knitting has experienced a huge resurgence of popularity. This class is a knit along for the intermediate or adventurous beginner knitter. We will be knitting the gorgeous Endpaper Mitts, a free downloadable pattern by Eunny Jang. In this class, you will learn two handed stranded knitting, tubular cast on, knitting in the round, and how to read a knitting chart.

SHORT ROW PRIMER
Fee: $35 Monday, 6:30 – 8:00 PM, October 13
Get started with short rows. Learn a couple of methods and the pros/cons of each. Practice with a stunning and easy short row scarf – perfect for you or get a jump on your holiday knitting. NOTE: Supplies: 2 Skeins of Nikki and size 11 needles. Bring one wound skein.

FELTED MOBIUS BOWLS
Fee: $35 Monday, 6:30 – 8:00PM, November 10.
You know the moebius cast on, and you want to try something new!? These little bowls are so much fun; you’ll be making one for everyone on your holiday list. Bring your size 13 circular needles (50 – 60”). Requirements: Must know the moebius cast on. Stop by in advance to pick up your yarn.

PRIVATE CLASSES WILL BE AVAILABLE EVERY WEDNESDAY

Kelly stopped by for a quick trip and showed off the progress on her February Lady Sweater almost done. The gull pattern looks so pretty in Malabrigo and feels divine.

One of our knit regulars showed off the progress on her Baby Surprise Jacket in Colinette Jitterbug. Actually, she was picking out some cute buttons.

Patty's flat feet sock has been hanging out on the back table. For all those interested in Flat Feet-this should give a good representation of how the yarn then becomes a sock. Each yarn is unique!

Classic Elite is rockin the house!

Classic Elite has been arriving in the shop and we are incredibly excited about a few things:

We got Moorland which is this stunning new yarn. Even though it looks like a worsted weight the gauge is 24 stitches over 4 inches. The yarn is Merino wool, baby alpaca, mohair with a little bit of acrylic. It has 147 yards which is recommended to be knit on a size 6 needle.

We also received Fresco yarn. This yarn is wool with baby alpaca. The gauge is 6 1/2 stitches to the inch on a size 5 needle. Each skein has 164 yards.

And what we are really excited about is the new pattern books from Classic Elite which are amazing! We already sold a few of these today so check out the links and see if you want to pick up one as well...

Organization

Many times we recommend keeping binders of patterns well Tuesday we met a customer who brought organization to a whole new level.
Here is a photo of the outside of her binder (her hand is blocking any personal information).

In the inside of this binder she keeps a photocopy of the pattern. On the back of the pattern (see to the left of the binder) she keeps the receipt of where she bought the yarn (and she labels the receipt which yarn is for what project), the yarn ballband with a sample of the yarn. I suggested taking a hole puncher to the ballband and then tying the yarn which she thought was a good idea.
This is a great organizational system. She also kept her yarn separated by project in bags with the name of the pattern written on it and the intended recipient plus diagrams she draws to understand the pattern.

Here is the super organized knitter modeling a wrap she is making for her friend.

By the way, she has not been knitting for a long time which I found impressive. You realize when talking to her that she really wants to comprehend the various knitting concepts and challenge herself.

As Sunday says, "Knit on!"

Flat Feet has arrived!

Looking for something different in sock yarn?

How about Flat Feet yarn which is handpainted in a sheet of yarn. There are two sections (although below I folded the sheet) so you make a pair of matching socks. Each flat feet is unique and fun!

There are bright colors (above) and more earth tones. These bad boys are going quickly (the pink one above was purchased by Sara as she witnesed the photo shoot).

The one below is being knit by Patty which you could probably watch on Thursday Night Knitting. Ironically, it reminds me of a multi-colored Union Jack.

So what are the details about this yarn?
The fingering weight yarn is superwash wool and 20% nylon and each set contains 450 yards. You knit this yarn from the flat sheet which means no winding and as one customer mentioned to today, "hey, I can just throw that on my shoulder."

Noro!

Oh, Fall is around the corner and we have restocked additional colors of Noro Silk Garden.

This worsted weight yarn is fabulous especially for the Noro Striped Scarf by Jared Flood (known as Brooklyn Tweed).

We loved the silk garden so much that we also got the chunky weight version of Silk Garden.

And we should be getting the Noro Silk Garden sock yarn soon...

Also on the way is a lot of warm yarn that is luscious to touch as autumn enters our neighborhood. We will post yarn as it arrives!

Thursday Night Knitting

One of our favorite folks who is a Thursday Night regular is Ms. Lucy who is a graceful woman that always surprises us with her charm, knitting, and her sassiness. I attempted to take her photo and she couldn't sit still during the process. So, I decided to post all of the photos.

Knitters Rock!

We are always amazed with the kindness of knitters. When one of our customers had a loved family member pass away she was surprised to learn of all the acrylic yarn left behind. Sheila mentioned that there is a group called the Chalkdust Knitters who after their full time job as educators teach young children to knit and crochet. This knitter brought in four large containers of yarn.

Of course the story doesn't end there. We then learned that another knitter teaches female inmates to knit, while another knitter teaches women with developmental disabilities, and there is a handful of knitters who participate in church run charity knitting groups.

While we don't know right now what this yarn will become we do know it is going into the hands of knitters and crocheters who are reaching out to make the world a better place one stitch at a time. You gotta love that!

Thursday Night Knitting

Well, Thursday Night brought in a lot of Lady February Knitters. Jean brought in the Elizabeth Zimmerman inspiration, the February Baby Sweater, that she knit a while ago in Jamieson yarn. (We have the Jamieson yarn on sale for $2 so you too can make the baby version). Isn't it precious?

Patty is already on the first sleeve of her Lady February.

Sheila is knitting in Pure Merino and just started the lace section on Thursday. Sheila opted not to do the buttons but may utilize similar buttons like in the Juliet sweater.

Lisa finished her three button holes and about to start the eyelet increases. She is knitting using Malabrigo in Verde Azul.

We also had Luanda, Jean, Mary Ellen and a few others tackling this sweater.
This weekend, Kelly picked up some Cliche yarn while Kristen picked up Venezia to start the Lady February.

Knitting this sweater with others has been a fun experience and we look forward to seeing all the finished Februaries.

Lady February Sweater

The Lady February Sweater is a free sweater pattern has taken off via the blogworld and primarily through Ravelry. The pattern inspired by Elizabeth Zimmerman's February Baby Sweater, available in Knitter's Almanac. It is designed by FlintKnits.

Over 1,000 people have started knitting this sweater. It is knit using worsted weight yarn at a gauge of 18 stitches over 4 inches (in garter stitch for your gauge swatch). The popularity can be attributed to the simple design, the EZ inspiration, or the fact that this top down sweater is just so darn cute!

Today, several people came in the shop to oogle Debra's finished sweater (in Cascade Sierra) and were not familiar with the pattern. We did start a store KAL (knit-a-long) on July 19th, and we have two sweaters clocked in as finished. With over 15 people knitting this pattern, you can imagine we like the pattern.

We promise to have photos soon of the sweaters in progress!

We got new colors of the Berroco Comfort yarn which has proved to be successful. Check out the new variegated colors available.

The Lady February Sweater.

Jenny stopped by earlier in the day to cast on as did Robin.

Pictured here, Lisa is knitting in Malabrigo which she described as, "Malabrigo-licious!", and Luanda is knitting with Cascade Venezia which she remarked as "shimmery, really smooth, but the yarn doesn't slide off the needles". Anne, Sunday, and Mary Ellen (who stopped by later) are using Ultra Alpaca. When prompted to describe how Anne feels about the yarn, her response, "I love it!". Sheila is using Pure Merino yarn and I am using Creme.

Unfortunately, I will be away for the next few days so updates on this knit-a-long may not appear until next weekend. However, if on Ravelry check the thread we have on the knit-a-long or stop by the shop to see what progress everyone is making.

The Kickoff

It is 12:02 July 19th, 2008, and some people are currently casting on for the Lady February Sweater Knit-A-Long we are doing. It is rather informal which means that a few folks will be stopping by on Saturday to sit, cast on and knit.

On other stix news, we have a new shop sample. The "Children's Cotton Hat" is a pattern available in Last Minute Knitted Gifts. This book is full of patterns that you will want to knit.

It is knit using Cotonade and took a little over one night to make. The hat is the toddler size and only took one skein. Imagine that, a quick knit and is $5.00 for the total project. These make a great gift for a baby.

Thursday Night Wishes

We wished our good friend Carol best wishes on her new adventure and hosted a little night dedicated to her. Carol is relocating to South Dakota to live with her daughter. She has been a consistent presence in our Thursday Nights blowing us away with her imaginary knitted designs (and no she doesn't write them up!) and her perky personality.

The ladies all contributed various forms of food and decadence. We had vegetable dip, strawberries and brie, Rosemary's scrumptious canapes. The table then extended into Patty's mom's double chocolate cupcakes, coffee cake, fruit salad, Lucy's chocolate brownies, and a double chocolate cake (notice the chocolate theme?).

All of this was done for this special lady. Carol usually would tell me not to post her photo and I am ignoring her this one time because we have to show off our great friend. Here she is with Sheila.

The Itty Bitty Hats book, by Susan B. Anderson, is fabulous. It contains so many adorable hats for babies to toddlers.
The upside down daisy hat is so much fun to knit especially when using Zara (which is machine washable).

This is a relatively quick knit although there is a little more sewing when you need to add the individual petals.
Zara is a super yummy yarn with great stitch definition. Stop by to see the hat and use the try me skein to test the yarn!

Belle stopped by with her adorable Baby Surprise Jacket knit in Claudia Handpainted Sportweight. She was picking buttons for the jacket (whoops, I think I took the picture without the buttons). This is such a great pattern. Notes on Juliet

We love the Zephystyle Patterns and that includes the Juliet cardigan. This cute and modern piece is knit using a bulky yarn and you get to have so much fun picking out funky buttons. We now sell the Zephyr patterns at the shop!

Notes from Luanda who knit the Juliet our latest store sample.

"I loved knitting the Juliet. I ended up using a size 11 needle only because I am a tight knitter. Maybe for a loose knitter smaller needles will do but to each her (his)own. I used less than one skein of the mahogany colored eco wool making it a yarn that lives up to it’s name. I knit an extra small but it was quite stretchy. Also I bet I could have gotten a medium size Juliet out of this skein. Blocking the Juliet was lovely. I stretched it to lengthen it slightly and to open up the eyelets.

The buttons were absolutely inspired. Those triangle buttons in the soft orange really put a contemporary spin on the cardigan and the color really popped (in a pleasing way) against the darkness of the wool. Anyway, I find the eco wool quite soft considering it’s a “work horse” kind of yarn and I love knitting with it. It’s texture and ply is very consistent. I’ve used eco wool for about 4 projects now and I must say that not once have I found a knot in it’s 400+yard skeins.

The pattern for the Juliet was very well written except for a tiny error in the suggested needle size given to get gauge. One part it said a 10 1/2 and on another it said a 10 but if you think about it it’s really not a problem since you should be swatching any way to get gauge trying different needles to suit your tension in knitting."

Louise stopped by a few times this week to finish seaming her asymmetrical latest Noro creation. She also picked up some yarn to knit the Lady February Sweater.

A new crocheter stopped by the shop to check out our inventory and showed off her recycled bag. She turns plastic bags into yarn and crochet bags. Go check out her website!

Also we had another knitter stop by for some technical difficulty with Elizabeth Zimmerman Baby Surprise Jacket. We sell the individual pattern as well as the book. She is on the increases but all turned out well. This is being knit in Mountain Colors yarn.

Sheila is making another Spanish Dancer with Noro. She is almost done with the the shawl.

The Spanish Dancer bug has passed on to Lisa who has decided to knit the whole thing out of stash sock yarn. Lisa's technique was to pull yarns that had purple and green as their primary colors.

Lisa also caught the Helena bug after seeing Patty's version in Wool Bam Boo. She picked up Zara in this lovely coral color.
Zara is such a great yarn because of its stunning stitch definition, softness of the yarn, and all the possible colors.

stix-n-stitches is celebrating world wide knit in public day!

We will be knitting outside the shop sipping iced tea and enjoying the summer weather. We will provide the refreshments, all you have to do is bring a knitting or crochet project, a lawn chair, sunglasses, and suntan lotion.

Come join us this Saturday, June 14th, from 11am-5pm. As always, surprises can only be revealed at the event.

This Saturday also marks the beginning of the Farmer's Market (Walnut Train Station) and it is also the Sidewalk Sale. This is certainly too much excitement to avoid!

Weekend Wrap-Up

The sweater class is coming to an end and Michelle has been rocking the sweaters!

Check out her recently completed Tilted Duster sweater by Norah Gaughan. The sweater is knit in the recommended Berroco Peruvia.

She also showed off her recently completed Green Gable sweater (although it is blue).
The sweater looks great. In the sweater, she did an extra repeat of the lace pattern but remarked that could have added an extra repeat (for all those interested in this pattern).

This is a Zephyrstyle pattern. And guess what? We have the Zephyrstyle patterns available in the shop!

Father's Day is coming up soon and a great project is a pair of socks like the Thank You Cabled Socks. Another wonderful project is a quick hat in a worsted weight yarn like the Urban Zen Cabled Hat. You could knit him a tie. If he enjoys golf, knit an Argyle Golf Cover.

But, I cannot stress enough- do not knit your father, husband, or loved one a Ferrari. Watch this video, be impressed with this art student's talent, but do not knit a Ferrari (there is simply not enough time this year).

Socks!

Socks are a great summer project. Why, you may ask?

There are so many colors and options. You can truly experiment with new colors that you normally may shy away.

Socks are portable.
Socks are light.

Knit a pair for a friend, family member, or swap partner.

You may even get a cute note from the recipient like Patty.

Patty knit a pair of socks for her brother and received the following email,

"My socks, said the Fox,
Are a curious sort of stripes.
Colorful hues of heathery rows
Cover his feet and cover his toes.
And wear them he did,
Exchanging front to the back,
And that Fox with the socks,
Stands out in the pack."

This weekend we had the pleasure of Anne and Amy knitting at the shop. The two are very knowledgeable in all things knitting and we always have a great time joking with them.

We had a proud customer picking out more buttons for two sweaters she made for her grandchildren. The sweaters are beautiful.

The first one is for a young girl and has an asymmetrical neckline.

The second one is for a young boy with stunning cables down the front and on the sleeves.

Stop by the shop with your finished knitted items. We love to see what is transformed from yarn into sweaters, socks, and other fun stuff!

Louet Wheel

Store Samples

Sunday was feeling a little bored and decided to knit a new store sample following a Fair Isle Pattern. Sunday discovered her love of knitting through Fair Isle patterns. This was the photo of the project in progress.

It is now all done and hanging out at the front. When you stop by the shop, Sunday may even show off this hat in another color pattern and knit in Boise (that is cashmere and divine).

Also check out the great bolero that Luanda knit for the shop. This cute little number is knit out of the Mirasol yarn which gives a portion of the money back to the community that produces the yarn.

Thursday Night Update

A lot of activity was occurring last Thursday Night, as many members who displayed their knitted goods in the video were done.

Take for instance, Lucy. Lucy's sweater was missing the sleeves the week before and now here is her sweater all done.

Norah finished her cardigan. Norah bought the roving at Rhinebeck in 2007, then spun the yarn and then knit this sweater.

Remi was working on Ann Norling hats and finished them. Remi did have to crochet the brim because knitting it wasn't giving her the right look and feel. It looks great.

So great, she made two.

Rosemarie finished her quiviuk lace tam, and is now working on the coordinating lace scarf.

Technical Difficulties

We have had a few technical difficulties within the technology department at stix-n-stitches (translation: my laptop needs to be repaired). There are a few posts I am attempting to post with lots of photos.

Ellen stopped over in between her trips of Morroco and Buenos Aires. She is making this little baby sweater which is a free Ravelry download.

One of our shop regulars stopped off this weekend and showed off her recent Baby Surprise Jackets. Aren't they adorable?

Louise came in with her finished shawl knit in Jamieson's 2 ply yarn which we currently have on sale for $2.00
Louise washed the shawl using her special mixture (you will have to ask her for the recipe) which made it super soft.
Sunday is modeling.
