Thursday Update: 12/6

One of our new Thursday night knitters started her own design for a wrap in Cascade Jewel. The wrap is stockinette with a seed stitch border. She finished one skein and has only five more to go.

Remi is in the progress of making a sock with a picot edge.

Continuing with socks, Carol also finished a pair in Cherry Tree Hill.

Jean is almost done with her Mr Greenjeans which she calls Mr Whinepants. Jean was selecting a button as she is working on the border.
Tomorrow, I will have the last post on Thursday's knitting projects.

Thursday Night Update

Thursday Night was hopping, so there will be three posts (two today and one tomorrow) to cover all the fiber festivities.

Let's begin with Ellen who is working on this lovely sweater in Reynold's Odyssey. This is definitely a shop favorite, with previous posts here or here. This is a very clean and modern design.

Kathy and Carol stopped by, yeah! We were so happy to see them it sounded like when everyone yelled "Norm" in the Cheers tv show (I might be dating myself with that comment). Kathy has been working on this lace shawl using Schaeffer Anne yarn.
Carol finished her Wool Bam Boo sweater (buttons and all). You might remember her working on this sweater.

And here is a close-up photo of the sweater. It came out great!

Website: Knitty

How could we not have recommended Knitty yet? Well, we certainly have recommended many patterns from Knitty. Knitty is an online knitting magazine. Each season they release a new edition with over a dozen patterns and several articles. Knitty also contains a forum where knitters and crocheters can discuss knitty patterns, interesting articles, as well as ongoing features such as "cool stuff". Check out Knitty's archive section to search older patterns.

Lastly, in between each of their publications they then release a "surprise" pattern. The last surprise was Veronik Avery's Oblique which looks to be a great pattern.

Go now and enjoy reading this wonderful site!

New Yarn: Cascade

Cascade has released Nikki yarn which is a super bulky yarn that has extremely long color changes in beautiful colorways. The yarn knits at 12 stitches=4" and has 109 yards. Sunday is in the process of a Lady Eleanor from Scarf Style (also known as entrelac). This yarn does have a thick and thin texture to it. We have several colors including: Napoleon (pictured below), Chocolate, Rainbow, and Landscape.

We also received Handpainted Jewel. Jewel is an aran weight yarn knitting at 14 stitches=4 inches and has 142 yards in each hank.
Pictured here are three new colors: denim storm, emerald city, and maple fall.
This yarn definitely has the look and feel of Manos.
We also have twelve colors in stock of the solid jewel hand painted.

As mentioned we have new colors of Cascade yarns including Pastaza. Pastaza knits at 16 stitches=4 inches and contains 132 yards in each hank.

The colors for Pastaza are so pretty and rich. Pastazza is 50% wool and 50% llama. We have over twenty different colors.
Happy Chanukah!

A Day at the shop...

While, stix is closed on Mondays, I thought I would post some photos from Thursday showing some of the inner workings of the shop....

Here is Sheila checking new buttons that we received and then putting them on the shelves...

John and Patty (not pictured below) received a lot of new Cascade yarn. The term "new" is interesting so please allow me to clarify. We received some new colors in Cascade 220 and 220 Superwash. And we also got new yarns....

Hmm, could that be new yarns?

That definitely looks like new yarn. New handpainted yarn.

Tomorrow, a post on new Cascade yarns.

Weekend Wrap-Up

Mary Beth Temple, the author of The Secret Language of Knitters, was at shop today signing copies of her book. She also brought a special guest (her daughter Katie) who is sporting a lovely purple ruffled scarf.

We had a good time sitting and knitting talking about everything (from yarn, techniques, Ravelry, to cooking and wool festivals).
The Jens were on the sofa accomplishing some quality knitting (left: I assuming a sock as I see DPNs, and on the right: Tree Coat in Malabrigo).

Eva and Ed stopped by first thing in the morning to show off their latest ventures and for Eva to enjoy some birthday shopping. Eva's birthday was Saturday (HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!) so today she came in and got her 20% off birthday discount.
Eva was inspired from a stitch pattern in Sally Melville's Knitting Experience Book 1: The Knit Stitch and came up with these lovely scarves. The yarn on the left is Jawoll sock yarn and on the right is Kaffe's new sock yarn.

Lastly, I forgot to post the recent wip (work in progress) from Stanlee. She has been knitting this cute baby sweater in Miss Priss. I hope to have a photo of the finished project because I literally took this picture when she put it on the table and it is looking great. We have a store sample of the yarn knit up in the very same pattern, so next time you are in ask about the Schaeffer baby sweater in Miss Priss.

Keep on Knitting!

It is definitely winter (as felt by all today). The cold air inspires us to knit things us to keep us warm.

Barclay stopped by to show us her recent socks knit up in Online. These house socks are a gift for a friend of hers.

Ina stopped by with Gumby to show off some calorimetries (plural for calorimetry) that she knit. On the table are two of her most recent completed ones. The one on the right is knit in Zitron Ecco.

Here is Ina and Gumby modeling how the calorimetry works.

We had mentioned calorimetry in another post because it doesn't require a lot of yarn and it is a quick knit project which makes it great for gifts. According to Ravelry, there are 1,500 calorimetries made by its members.
What are some of the yarns in the shop that would work well with this pattern?

Top right in Pink: Zarella
Bottom right in Purple and Green: Artyarns Ultramerino 8
Bottom left in Blue: Zitron Ecco
Top left in Blue: Reynolds Odyssey

Most of these yarns can be knit using a size 6 US needle.

Tomorrow, we are hosting Mary Beth Temple the author of The Secret Language of Knitters from 2-4pm.

Also, join our stix-n-stitchers group on Ravelry and get a sneak peek on specials and events.
